Bootcamp Phase

The Innovation Accelerator @ Demokritos acts as a hub for science-driven and deep tech innovation. By supporting startups and researchers in developing and scaling groundbreaking solutions to global challenges, the accelerator demonstrates its commitment to impactful progress. We are proud to be among the select few accelerators chosen to collaborate with NATO’s Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA). This collaboration recognises our ongoing efforts to advance dual-use technologies and foster innovation in defense and security. For this initiative, the support of Hellenic Ministry of Defence and the Hellenic Defence Centre for Innovation (HDCI) was has been instrumental, underscoring the importance of collaboration in advancing defense and security technologies.

The first cluster of Innovation Accelerator@Demokritos, NATO DIANA’s Greek Dual Use Accelerator, marked a dynamic and highly structured start to the programme, setting the tone for collaboration between startups, defence stakeholders, and the broader innovation ecosystem. The kickoff week combined strategic orientation with hands-on capacity building, beginning with a formal welcome of the innovators and in-depth insights into the local defence market, followed by an open discussion around a real dual-use startup case study. These early sessions helped founders align their technologies with defence and security needs while grounding them in the realities of dual-use deployment. The cluster also emphasized community-building through networking moments and informal exchanges, reinforcing trust and openness among participants from day one. Across the remainder of the cluster, activities focused on strengthening both team dynamics and business readiness. Founders engaged in intensive team-building and stress-management sessions in a military environment, alongside practical workshops on setting KPIs, understanding the dual-use landscape, customer-centric product development, and market research. One-to-one meetings with the NATO DIANA Challenge Manager provided tailored feedback and strategic guidance, while the official launch event and pitch and product demo training prepared startups to communicate effectively with stakeholders, customers, and investors. Collectively, the first cluster laid a solid foundation by blending strategic defence context, entrepreneurial skills, and personalized mentorship, ensuring startups were well-prepared for the journey ahead.

The 2nd cluster expanded the accelerator’s scope onto the international stage, with Innovation Accelerator@Demokritos actively participating in NATO DIANA Defense & Innovation Days, supporting the Greek DIANA cohort—Kelluu, ThothX Meridian, SaraniaSat Inc., Raymetrics Advanced Lidar Systems, and SandboxAQ—in connecting their technologies with real defence needs and opportunities. The event convened a powerful transatlantic ecosystem of more than 70 startups and over 20 accelerator sites from North America and Europe, creating a dense environment for collaboration, matchmaking, and strategic dialogue. Key outcomes of the cluster included direct exposure to investment pathways through the NATO Innovation Fund and strengthened engagement between startups and defence end-users, reinforcing market access and adoption potential. Hosted by NATO DIANA in collaboration with the Polish Ministry of National Defence, this milestone cluster underscored the programme’s role in positioning Greek dual-use innovators within the broader Allied defence innovation landscape.

The 3rd cluster marked a pivotal transition from acceleration to market-facing engagement, centering on Investors’ & End Users’ Day and reinforcing the programme’s mission to bridge innovation with real-world operational needs. During this high-impact gathering, startups and scale-ups from the NATO DIANA programme engaged directly with leading investors and defence-oriented end users, gaining first-hand insight into market expectations, procurement realities, and operational challenges. Structured across thematic sessions, the cluster enabled meaningful dialogue with prominent venture capital firms—including Phaistos VC, BIGPI VC, L-Stone VC, APEIRON VC, UNIFUND VC, METAVALLON VC, and Blue Dome VC—creating concrete pathways for investment readiness and growth. Equally important, the cluster fostered deep engagement with major industrial and defence stakeholders such as Lockheed Martin, Intracom Defense, Scytalys, Apella, METLEN, and ALTUS SA. By placing innovators, investors, and end users in the same room, the third cluster catalyzed synergies, refined value propositions, and accelerated the alignment of deep-tech solutions with real operational demand—solidifying a critical milestone in transforming innovation into deployable, impactful capabilities.

The 4th cluster of Innovation Accelerator@Demokritos, part of the NATO DIANA network, focused on empowering founders with the communication, branding, and presentation skills required to succeed in complex defence and dual-use markets. Over four intensive days in April 2025, participants engaged in high-impact masterclasses on crisis communication and reputation management, branding and marketing, pitching structure, public speaking, storytelling, negotiations, and deck improvement. These sessions equipped innovators to articulate their value propositions with clarity, confidence, and credibility—particularly when engaging with investors, institutional stakeholders, and defence end users. Beyond the classroom, the 4th Cluster emphasized real-world exposure and ecosystem connectivity. A dedicated visit to Intracom Defense offered participants a first-hand look at defence infrastructure and go-to-market strategies, while matchmaking sessions with the Greek innovation ecosystem fostered new collaborations and partnerships. Insights from experienced practitioners and founders complemented the training, grounding communication techniques in real operational and commercial contexts. Altogether, the fourth cluster strengthened the narrative, leadership, and market-facing readiness of the cohort—an essential step in translating advanced technologies into trusted, deployable solutions.

The 5th cluster unfolded in a high-visibility, market-facing environment with Innovation Accelerator@Demokritos participating in DEFEA Exhibition 2025, marking a major milestone for the NATO DIANA Greek cohort. From day one, hundreds of visitors engaged with the accelerator’s innovators—Kelluu, SaraniaSat Inc., Raymetrics S.A., SOTIRIA Technology, SandboxAQ, and ThothX Meridian—as they showcased cutting-edge dual-use technologies and built strategic connections across the defence ecosystem. The exhibition enabled direct dialogue with senior decision-makers, including Stavros Kalafatis, Dimitrios Choupis, and Nynke Tig chelaar, reinforcing the programme’s role in elevating startup visibility and credibility at both national and European levels. The cluster culminated in the Innovators Demonstration Day, hosted by Innovation Accelerator@Demokritos as a flagship event of the NATO DIANA Acceleration Program. In front of a high-profile audience of investors, entrepreneurs, and defence leaders, selected startups—SandboxAQ, ThothX Meridian, SaraniaSat Inc., Raymetrics S.A., and Kelluu—delivered live demonstrations of advanced solutions spanning AI-driven quantum technologies, aerial surveillance, and atmospheric sensing. Beyond the stage, the day fostered meaningful networking and matchmaking, accelerating pathways from concept to deployment. Cluster 5 powerfully demonstrated how exposure to global defence markets and decision-makers can translate innovation into real-world impact, closing the loop between technology development, validation, and adoption.
