The IntelWATT project, coordinated by the Membranes and Materials for Environmental Separations Laboratory at NCSR Demokritos and led by Dr. Andreas Sapalidis, recently completed a pilot installation at Unit 5 of the Megalopolis Power Plant.

Since October 2020, this EU-funded HORIZON 2020 project has united 20 European partners to develop advanced water treatment technologies aimed at conserving water, generating energy, and recovering materials in energy-intensive industries. The pilot installation focuses on recycling cooling tower blowdown water to reduce wastewater discharge and optimize water management. By analyzing the pilot’s data, PPC is moving closer to fully recovering and reusing industrial water in electricity generation, marking a significant step towards sustainable industrial practices.
